SECONDARY NEWS

The first three weeks of term have positively flown by. It is good to see the examination students return to class after the trials and tribulations of their mock exams. Their subject tutors are now busy hatching plans aimed at helping these students make the best of both their talents and the remaining time. Over the next couple of weeks, the Art students will be sitting their mock exams so good luck to them. Provisional results from the November CIE exams came out last Friday. Most of the resit students improved upon their first attempts and the Year 11 Development Studies students all did very well. Congratulations to them all. If they have not yet collected their results they can get them from me as soon as possible. Jon Turner

PRIMARY NEWS

It has been a productive three weeks of term and I am pleased to report that the children are settled and progressing well so far this term. Many congratulations to the P.T.A for all their hard work at the Cheese and Wine evening that took place last Friday. The evening was a tremendous success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Next week we will be hosting an evening informing parents about what to expect when their child goes to Secondary school. Year Six parents should have received their invitations but please feel free to attend even if your child is not in Year Six. If your child is in Key Stage Two, he or she should have started his or her Science project. Please encourage your child and if you have any questions please contact Mrs. Sportel who is the Science Coordinator. At this time of year we look to recruit teachers for August. Often some of our parents are trained teachers, if you are a trained and experienced teacher or if you know of anyone looking for a position at Baobab please come and see me, or drop a C.V. and covering letter to the Principals office. Please note that if you have or know of other children who wish to enrol for April or August please contact the Admissions Department because we have reached our capacity in many of our year groups and waiting lists have been formed. Please ensure your child is brought to school on time and that your child is collected after his or her afternoon activity. Children should be collected no later than 16.00hrs and on Friday 13.15hrs. Children have an exceptionally long day at School. Please don’t make it unnecessarily longer for them. Thank you for your cooperation. Enjoy the next few weeks! Best wishes Laura Stokes

LIBRARY NEWS We would like to extend a very special thanks to the PTA for the generous donation of K1.5million to each of the school libraries. We went on a shopping trip and managed to get 48 and 58 books for the Secondary and Primary libraries respectively. What a wonderful New Years gift. Here is a quote from one of the books we managed to buy; “There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them”-Joseph Brodsky, 1991. Suzgo Muwowo Eileen Bowden Secondary Librarian Primary Librarian

PRIMARY SCIENCE FAIR

Only 3 weeks to go. The Primary Science Fair will be held on Thursday 15th February. The three days prior to the Fair will be Science Days and your last chance to finish your project. Science is exciting and I am looking forward to seeing all your efforts in a good project. If you still have not found a topic, then look at yahooligans, com or science buddies. Good websites with lots of ideas. Good luck. Gea Sportel Primary Science Coordinator.

BAOBAB SUDOKU

The winner of the last edition’s Sudoku was; Philip “Sudoku King” Kalinda. His subject tutors have since been advised to set him even more work than at present as he clearly has too much time on his hands! Entries should be sent either via a paper copy to Jon Turner, or email it to him at

SECONDARY MATHS NEWS

Intermediate Maths Challenge! Selected students from years 9-11 will be taking part in the challenge on Thursday 1st February. Good luck everyone, lets get some gold awards! Maths Jokes Teacher: 'Add 4911 to 3748, divide by three and multiply by 7. What have you got?' Student: 'The wrong answer.' How many times can you subtract 17 from 149? -Only once, because after that you are not subtracting it from 149 anymore! Teacher: 'If you bought 16 buns for 32p, what would each bun be?' Student: ' Stale, sir!' What did one maths book say to the other? 'Boy, have I got problems!'

P.T.A. NEWS

Cheese and Wine: A warm thank you to all those parents, teachers and children who came along to our Meet and Greet Cheese ‘n Wine evening under the trees last Friday night. I’m sure you’ll agree that the selection of eats and drinks was impressive, and the atmosphere relaxed and very social. Such was the positive response received from several people who attended the function, we’re hoping to make events like this a more regular feature on the PTA social calendar. PTA Wild West Saloon Evening: Yeeee Haaaaah! Grab your partners and doh-sidoh! It’s the PTA’s Wildest Wild West Evening ever! Tickets will be on sale SOON for this great event, taking place on Saturday 24th February. The cost is K70 000 per person, which includes a slap up, Cowboy-style meal. A cash bar will be available, but coolboxes are welcome. Watch this space, and the school notice boards, for more details. PTA Book Donation: The Baobab PTA is very proud of the new books which were added to the school libraries this past week. The PTA donated K3m to this project, which enabled the school to purchase a wide range of exciting new titles for both the Primary and Secondary libraries. Pop along to either library, where Mrs Bowden or Miss Muwowo will be more than happy to show you the new additions.
