BAOBAB COLLEGE – Boarding News and Information           Issue 8 2007/05th October

HoB NEWS

Well 7 weeks into term and I am now feeling settled in and have got to know most of the Boarders quite well and also have got a lot of positive feedback about Boarding at Baobab College in general. I have also been approached by a couple of parents who have raised issues with me and I am happy to say that I feel these issues have been dealt with already. If you have a contrary view to that please do not hesitate to get in touch with me and later in this edition of The Boarding Bark you will see a general invite to an informal social gathering in the boys House on Monday (15th October) at 07:00.

Some or all of you will have noticed that the school has introduced a detention period from 13:10 to 14:00 on a Friday and unfortunately a number of Boarders have been placed in detention over the past few Fridays, this will of course mean that they will not be available for collection until 14:00 on Friday and with this in mind the House Parents are ensuring that the children do ring you to inform you if they have been placed in detention.

I would like to wish you all a Happy Half Term which starts on Friday 19th October after the Independence Assembly (unless your child is in detention) and look forward to welcoming the boys and girls back on either Sunday 28th October or Monday 29th October 2007

AS Merryweather

Head of Boarding.

BOYS NEWS

Just a polite reminder that we are looking for some volunteers to help man the Coffee Stall on Friday 2nd November at the PTA Fireworks. At the moment it’s looking like Mrs Snook is going to be very busy and will miss the firework display completely as she will be up to her elbows in coffee. If you can’t help on the night a tray of brownies or muffins or biscuits will suffice.

CAR BOOT SALEIt is coming back and again we will be putting up a stall to flog all the wonderful treasurers you bring us. Only problem being we don’t have much or any so have a scratch around and let us relieve you of all the stuff you don’t want anymore – selling of husbands is not permitted!!

SPORTS NEWSYet again there is much to report from the sports field:

Cricket 6’s: The main competition was won by DILLIGAF who managed to scrape past the Boarders Team led by Andrew Toms with Tyrone Toms, Duncan Thorne, Nicole Ford, Robyn Geldenhuys and that old boarder Mr Terry Toms making up the team. Being put into bat The Boarders got off to the worst possible start losing Nicole out, bowled for a duck and then disaster of disasters that “old boarder” got himself run out scrambling for a run after some confusion in the middle between him and his son and some sharp work in the outfield. Andrew went on to make 24 not out of the 47 runs in total and DILLIGAF knocked the runs off in reply with an over to spare. At the prize giving ceremony conducted by Mr Tim Middleton, Principal, Mr Gavin Rose, captain of DILLIGAF commended the Boarders VI for the high standard of cricket they played and it was only the superior experience of the DILLIGAF players that won them the tournament. Andrew also went on to win “Best Batsman” in the tournament for his 107 runs not out for the whole tournament.

We are organising a Parents/Staff vs Baobab College cricket match and I am pleased to announce that Mr Terry Toms has been appointed captain of the Parents/Staff team. The venue is likely to be Lusaka South Country Club but the date is still to be confirmed

GIRLS NEWS

SPORTS NEWS

Cricket 6’s: As mentioned in Boys News 2 of our girls were involved in the Cricket 6’s team which came a close 2nd to DILLIGAF. Robyn and Nicole held their own against the men and Robyn came out as overall winner with 4 wickets and the disputed run out of Mr Riddiford. Congratulations Robyn.

Volleyball: At the volleyball tournament our Girls U19 team were beaten into 2nd place after a very tight and closely contested final. Once again Boarding was well represented and congratulations go to Nyamekye Egan, Souadou Brogan, Manjase Lungu and Royce Kabunda

General: We are proud that the Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl have been chosen from Girls Boarding and we wish Tafi and Kylie success in the coming year. We are also pleased that Chitalu and Robyn were also given positions of responsibility. Keep it up and lead with the best of your ability

NOTICES

Have you seen these two boarding parents, they were last seen crossing the Kafue Road en route to Kamwala. A reward is offered to anyone who knows of their whereabouts to keep it a secret

Above is a small montage reminder of last years independence assembly with Mr Grey Zulu

Swimming: We have had 2 gala’s since the last bark and boarding has been well represented in both with Dewaal Kotze, Claudio Valenza, Selby Cary, and Rudi le Roux all representing Baobab College at the Junior gala hosted by Italian School. In the more recent Senior gala hosted here at Baobab we had Tyrone Toms, Andrew Toms and Troy Landing in an under strength team. Mr Middleton, in his address to the secondary school on Wednesday, noted that a number of students deliberately missed the gala rendering us under strength to the extent that we could not enter swimmers in some of the races. He compelled students to take pride in being selected to represent the school in any sport or activity and such a situation would not be tolerated in future.

Volleyball: Thabo Mazombwe, Tiens Kahenya and Mulemwa Mukande all played volleyball for Baobab last Saturday in the U19 division. Some great volleyball was on display and this gang of three helped Baobab to a commendable semi final spot. It should also be mentioned that we provided 5 scorers on the day and thanks go to Rudi le Roux, Saidi Malewa, Samuel Nkhoma, Paricha Chikoye and Tonderai Kanyowa for giving up most of their Saturday and scoring the volleyball

ACADEMICS This group really should come before Sports News, however:

Examinations: The CIE external exams have started already and we would like to wish everyone who is sitting exams at this time the best of luck.

Selby Cary sat his ABRSM Theory exam a few weeks ago and is awaiting the results of that. He reports that it went ok but a couple of questions were a bit tricky. Having checked some of the answers he gave with Mr Merryweather it seems actually he has done rather well. Fingers crossed Selby.

Progress Sheets: These came out on 28th September for Secondary students and you should by now have received them even if they were forwarded to you by carrier pigeon. If you haven’t seen your son’s progress report now would be a good time to ask him. The next progress sheet comes out on 2nd November, make a note in your diary.

Drama & Performance: Well done Dewaal and Claudio who both had significant parts in the recent Year 6 Assembly a more realistic hyena I have never seen portrayed on stage and also to Vasco, Nick, Troy, Juan and Will for the work and effort they put in recently to make the Secondary Production on 25th and 26th September such a huge success

General: As mentioned earlier well done to those boys who have been appointed prefects for this year, in particular to Andrew and Mwansa who are head Boy and Deputy Head Boy respectively.

NOTICES

ART EXHIBITION: There will be an Art Exhibition in the Boys House on Thursday 18th October from 17:30 hours. All parents are most welcome if they are available otherwise some of the exhibits may be in place on Friday when you come to collect your children after the Independence Assembly
